How to draw music and listen

01

Pick a color and customize its instrument

The six slots are six voices, not a limit of six colors. Select a voice and use Custom color below the palette to choose any color. Open Colors & instruments to edit the name, waveform, attack, release and brightness. Draw left to right to make a sequence, and higher to hear higher notes. The grid labels notes in your chosen key and scale. The eraser removes whole strokes; Undo restores changes.

Choose an output for your musical idea

WAV for listening and video

The mono 44.1 kHz WAV includes your custom synthesis, drawing and recorded MIDI notes for one loop plus its release tail. Metronome clicks and muted voices are excluded. Convert the WAV if you need MP3 or M4A.

Convert audio format

MIDI for editing notes

MIDI preserves notes, timing and tempo for another music app. It contains no recorded sound; playback timbres depend on the receiving instrument or soundfont and may differ from the WAV.

JSON to keep editing, PNG for the drawing

JSON keeps strokes, voice colors, key and settings. Use Open project to import it again. PNG is only an image and cannot be imported as notes. The tool does not transcribe photos, PDF notation or audio files.

Play MIDI and share your project

Play along with the loop

Connect MIDI reads a keyboard or controller through Web MIDI in a supported browser on HTTPS or localhost. It does not send SysEx or control external instruments. Recording preserves MIDI pitches and quantizes timing; changing key or scale remaps drawn strokes. Notes outside the displayed scale appear near the closest row but retain their original pitch. You can record with the on-screen note keys without a controller.

Send a named snapshot

Share stores the project in the part of the URL after # without uploading it to the KitoTool server. The recipient confirms opening a copy, can Cancel to keep a draft, or Undo after opening. Anyone with the link can access it; there is no password, expiry or revocation. Later edits do not update the link. Export and send JSON for projects too large for a link.

Explore music theory through drawing

Time axis and musical scales

The horizontal axis represents time in 4/4; the vertical axis selects notes from a scale. Major pentatonic uses five degrees per octave, while major and natural minor use seven. Draw an ascending line, switch scales and listen to the difference without needing to read notation first.

Quantization, swing and chords

The 1/4, 1/8 or 1/16 grid controls note density over time; swing delays alternating steps. Overlapping strokes can create chords, with up to eight notes at each step. This visual music instrument helps explore ideas; it is not a full music theory course or an AI song generator.

If you cannot hear anything

Browser audio is not active
Press Play yourself, increase the volume and check that the tab is not muted. Playback stops when you switch tabs; return and press Play to continue.
There are no unmuted notes
Draw at least one stroke or load a sample. Check Mute voices; muted colors remain visible with reduced opacity but produce no audio in playback or export.
The drawing reached its limit
The limits are 96 strokes, 512 points per stroke and 40–220 BPM. Lift to start a new stroke when a line is full; erase strokes or export JSON for multiple versions. On phones, begin with fewer strokes and shorter loops.

Where are drawings and audio processed?

The canvas, audio synthesis and WAV/MIDI export run in your browser. The tool does not send strokes or notes to a server, use your microphone or call an AI API. The page still loads app resources from KitoTool. Your draft stays in this browser’s site storage and does not sync to another device.

Clearing site data or using private browsing can remove the draft. Export JSON to back it up and keep a WAV if you need the exact synthesized sound. The voices are synthesized sounds, not recordings of acoustic instruments.
